Are Aluminum Bottles Safe?

The use of aluminum bottles is growing throughout numerous industries including those for cosmetics and beverages. With their increased popularity comes an increased demand of awareness of its safety features. Especially with the potential health hazards of plastic bottles in mind, people are asking themselves: Are aluminum bottles safe? This is an understandable concern, especially because these bottles are used to store products that come into direct contact with our body.

Aluminum bottles have become increasingly popular due to their durability, lightweight design, high-end appearance, and overall environmentally friendly features. Because of all these benefits that aluminum bottles have to offer, it’s no surprise that they are currently being used in every single industry. To answer the question if aluminum bottles are safe, we have to dive deeper into the bottle’s characteristics.

What Are Aluminum Bottles?

As their name suggest, aluminum bottles are bottles made of lightweight and high-end aluminum material. These bottles feature a metallic appearance and are popular among the general public due to its light weight and durability. Aluminum bottles are furthermore rust-resistant and, when coated, do not corrode. Not only are the bottles strong and lightweight, they also have aesthetics on their side. Aluminum bottles simply look much more appealing to the eye than their plastic alternative. To protect the metal bottle from corrosion and heavy-metal leaching, it come lined with a coating. This food-grade coating prolongs the lifespan of the bottle and ensures that your skin and product won’t get into direct contact with the aluminum metal. This ensures the safety and purity of your product. Nevertheless, some people still have health concerns about the use of aluminum bottles and are asking themselves: Are aluminum bottles safe to use?

Heath Concerns and Solutions

When it comes to aluminum bottles and aluminum packaging in general, some people may have health-related concerns. These concerns are mainly about how this metal packaging may affect the product stored inside as well as the effects it may have on health of the person who consumes it. Below, we will have a look at the most common concerns people have about aluminum bottles.

Aluminum Expose and Heavy Metal Leaching

The main concern people have about metal packaging in general is the exposure to heavy metals. Just as any metal, aluminum is not 100% sure and it may contain traces of other metals. The main concern about aluminum packaging is the potential for aluminum exposure of that of other heavy metals found inside of the aluminum. A high exposure to any of these metals can cause health-related problems.

Luckily, this concern has already been addressed by the industry and it is nothing to worry about. Pure aluminum is prone to corrosion, which is why aluminum packaging always comes with a food-grade coating. This coating prevents the bottle from corroding, but also ensures that the product stored inside won’t get into direct contact with the aluminum itself. This impenetrable barrier between the product and the aluminum prevents any type of metal leaching. As a result, you can be 100% guaranteed that the product inside coated aluminum containers is safe to consumers.

    BPA and Other Toxic Chemicals

The presence of BPA in tin cans and bottles is a major concern among the general public. This because most of us are well aware of the presence of this chemical in plastic packaging and worry that it may also be used in aluminum containers. Luckily, this is usually not the case.

BPA is a chemical that can mimic your hormones and it has been linked to numerous health problems, including ADHD and certain types of cancer. Aluminum itself is, by nature, a chemical-free and non-toxic metal. It is furthermore food-safe and can be safely used for storing cosmetics, food products, beverages, and even pharmaceuticals. As such, you do not have to worry about aluminum containing BPA or any other type of chemicals that can affect your health.

That being said, the concerns about aluminum packaging containing BPA are not completely ungrounded. As mentioned above, most aluminum packaging is lined. There are different types of liners (coatings) available, and not all of them have the same quality. Some liners may, in fact, be plastic linings which contain BPA. This is why it is very important to make sure that your supplier or manufacturer uses a high-quality BPA-free coating that is food-safe. As long as your aluminum bottles use a food-grade and BPA-free liner, you won’t have to worry about BPA or any other type of toxic chemicals.

    Concerns about Durability

No matter the packaging material in question, people always have concerns about durability and impact resistance. Plastic packaging, for example, can tear whereas glass packaging can shatter and break. Luckily, none of these concerns are something to be worried about when it comes to aluminum packaging!
Although light in weight, aluminum packaging is extremely strong. It’s no surprise that this metal is used in a vast amount of industries. It is even used for building airplanes! Aluminum is known for its lightweight design along with its durability and resistance to breakage. Although aluminum bottles may dent, they do not break, shatter, or tear. This makes them a much more durable and safer packaging compared to glass and plastic bottles. This is especially the case when they are used in environments where they are exposed to rough handling and dropping. Their extreme durability along with a long list of other benefits of aluminum packaging makes them superior over glass and plastic alternatives.

Conclusion

As it has become clear throughout this article, the main concerns about the use of aluminum bottles relate to aluminum exposure, BPA, and durability. Luckily, none of these concerns are something you have to worry about as long as you purchase a high-end aluminum bottle from a well-trusted supplier. Aluminum bottles are extremely durable and their coating prevents any type of heavy-metal leaching. Before purchasing aluminum packaging for your products we do, however, always recommend you to contact your supplier to make sure that the lining used is BPA-free. As long as this is the case, then you have absolutely nothing to worry about and aluminum bottles are 100% safe to use. It’s no surprise that these bottles are becoming increasingly popular and are nowadays used in nearly every industry including that for cosmetics, food, beverages, supplements, and medicine.

If you are planning to reuse your aluminum bottles, then there are a handful of tips you can keep in mind to prolong your bottle’s life and to ensure the packaging safety. We recommend you to clean the bottles regularly with a mild soap and water. Avoid any harsh chemicals and hard brushes that might damage the lining. We also do not recommend freezing or microwaving the bottles, as this may also damage the lining. It is also recommended to always check the bottles for any type of potential damage such as dents or scratches – especially on the inside. Over time, this type of minor damages may affect the internal coating. As long as you keep these simple tips in mind, then you have nothing to worry about when using aluminum bottles.
