Over the last decade or so, there has been a lot of talk about sustainability and eco-friendliness, particularly in the business world. As more and more businesses set green targets and pledge to be greener and more sustainable, it’s clear that the business landscape is changing, particularly from a packaging standpoint.
With packaging playing such a key role in day-to-day business operations for a variety of different organizations, it’s clear that the need for sustainable packaging is greater than ever. It turns out that there is quite the market for sustainable packaging too. In fact, in 2024, the sustainable packaging industry was valued at a staggering 270 billion dollars. While official figures for 2025 have not yet been released, industry experts predict that figure to be even higher.
Because of the many dangers associated with plastic and how plastic packaging is made, more organizations are using materials deemed more sustainable and eco-friendly for their packaging.
With packaging materials such as cardboard, paper, and glass all solid choices when it comes to recyclable packaging, there’s one material that seemingly cannot be beaten. That material is aluminum.
Here are 5 interesting facts about aluminum recycling.
Aluminum Can be Recycled Quickly
As more companies pledge to ditch the plastic packaging in favor of more sustainable options, aluminum is quickly proving to be the most popular choice.
Whereas some plastics can now be recycled, the process varies massively from location to location and can take a considerable amount of time, usually around 60 days. Now, when you compare this with aluminum, the recycling process is much faster.
Again, there are a number of variables to consider, but typically it takes between 30 and 40 days to recycle aluminum, which is roughly half the time of plastic.
Recycling Aluminum is Very Important
While there’s a lot of talk about the importance of recycling, what isn’t always clear is why it’s so important to recycle.
Aluminum may be much, much more environmentally friendly than plastic, but whenever possible, it should always be recycled and used again, rather than being produced from new. This is because, in order for aluminum to be produced, it must first be made from bauxite ore. Mining bauxite ore produces a great deal of CO2. Then of course, the ore must be refined into aluminum oxide and then liquid aluminum. Again, this produces a lot of CO2 and requires a great deal of energy.
Recycling aluminum requires a considerably smaller amount of energy. In fact, recycling aluminum uses as much as 95% less energy than producing it from new. This is why recycling aluminum is vastly more environmentally friendly than producing it from new.
Aluminum Can Be Recycled into Different Products
Another reason why aluminum is proving to be such a popular sustainable packaging material is because different aluminum products can be recycled into different things.
Beer and soda cans for example, are primarily made from aluminum yet they can be recycled into different things. Rather than simply being recycled and turned into brand-new drinks cans, they can be used to make other forms of aluminum packaging and products such as pouches, trays, and tubes.
Aluminum Can Be Recycled Indefinitely with No Loss of Quality
Perhaps the most prominent reason why aluminum packaging is so sustainable is because it can be recycled over and over again, as many times as you like, with virtually no loss in quality.
Even though recycling plastic is considered much friendlier for the planet, plastic cannot be recycled indefinitely. Each time it is recycled its structural integrity drops. This is why most plastic packaging products can only be recycled between 2 and 10 times before it is no longer viable. Afterwards, it finds its way to landfill where it poses a number of environmental risks.
With aluminum packaging, it can be recycled over and over again with no loss of quality. That’s why aluminum cans which have been recycled twice are just as strong and durable as aluminum cans which have been recycled close to one hundred times.
Aluminum is One of the Most Commonly Recycled Materials in the World
And finally, because of the key points we’ve highlighted above, along with this ‘miracle metal’ proving to be so lightweight and economical, aluminum is one of the most commonly recycled materials on the face of the earth.
Recycling aluminum not only makes sense from an environmental perspective, but also from a business standpoint as well. It’s quick, it’s easy, it’s much kinder to the planet, and it’s affordable. Because of this, it is used for packaging across a number of different business sectors, particularly food and drink and beauty and cosmetics.
Official figures may vary, but the general consensus is that consumers recycle as much as 75% of all aluminum products after using them, including packaging.
